Chapter Eleven

A Dark Heart

ELLOUESE HURRIED ALONG the bush path with Joel close on her heels. Now that she had a plan, she wanted to get back to the Well of a Thousand Wishes as quickly as possible. Her face was hot, and her cheeks were burning with excitement—she knew of a way out! Every now and then she glanced back over shoulder to make sure Joel was still behind her. Grey clouds covered the sun, and the air was cold, but she didn’t notice. Neither did she notice that the path they were walking on was closing behind them as if it had never been there.

Joel looked at the back of Ellouese’s head in front of him. She had tucked her long hair inside her collar as if to keep her neck warm. Joel increased his speed to keep up with her. He was puzzled. Who could ever understand a girl like Ellouese? She clearly didn’t like him, so why had she asked him to come along? If she had found a way to leave this weird place, why hadn’t she told everyone? There was something odd about it all.

Ellouese spotted the tree she was looking for; it had lost all its leaves overnight, and the stark branches pointed to the narrow stone track leading into the wilderness and to the cave. A black crow sat on one of the lower branches and cawed. Ellouese stopped abruptly, and Joel bumped into her. She scowled and shook him off in annoyance.

“This way,” she said tersely.

Joel looked around and suddenly wasn’t sure he wanted to go any further. The grass along the side of the track was dark brown. The overhanging trees were lifeless, and the bottoms of the trunks were black as if burnt from below. Apart from the crow’s call, there was an eerie silence, and everything was shrouded in a grey coldness.

“Are you sure this is the right way?” he said uncertainly. “This place gives me the creeps.”

“Of course I’m sure,” Ellouese snapped back. “Just follow me.”

Joel hesitated. “This doesn’t look like the way out. How do you know this is the right way?” The lump behind his ear was hot and throbbing. He covered it with hand and looked back. “What …” His mouth dropped open in astonishment. “Where’s the path!” He swivelled his head around, searching.

“What path?”

“The dirt track we just came along. It’s not there!”

Ellouese spun around and snapped, “Never mind about that path—this is the way.” She stepped onto the stony track under the barren tree. The crow cawed loudly.

“This feels all wrong! I want to go back! This is not the way out!” Joel panicked. He swung around and crashed into a shrub that had not been there a few moments ago. It was big and prickly, and he furiously tried to push it aside, looking for the way back to the garden. The track they had just come along was now overgrown with dense, impenetrable bushland, and there was no way through.

With a flash of fear, Ellouese realized that they were trapped.
